#3 - 9x08 Idol
When I first heard...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#3 - 9x08 Idol

When I first heard that the Wonder Twins would be a part of the episode I thought it was really bad idea, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. The twins were used in a small dose and to prop up Clark. This a was huge change from other episodes where the guest hero tends to outshine Clark. I loved how good he was with the them and it was great glimpse into how inspires people as Superman.

Despite all the great stuff with Clark, my favorite part of this episode has to be the Lois portions. This episode is my favorite Lois episode of the series for several reasons. The idea of Lois in therapy isn’t a new one, but it was still great to see what makes her tick. Lois also ends up technically figuring out that Clark’s the Blur and I love that she was willing to die if it kept his secret safe. We know there’s no way Clark would let that happen and thanks to the wonder twins he was able to save her without his secret coming out. Something else I enjoyed was that despite her admiration of the Blur she could still call him out on his crap. Also as a villain Ray Sacks was fantastic. I loved having a villain that wasn’t Kryptonian or Luthor related. It’s too bad we didn’t get more of those because it would have been a nice change of pace.

Favorite Smallville Episodes
#4 - 10x07 Ambush
This is episode...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#4 - 10x07 Ambush

This is episode is one of my favorites of season 10. I had been hoping we’d get an onscreen reunion with General Lane & Lucy since their first appearances in season 4, so I was glad that they were able to do that before the show ended. As a Clois fan I obviously loved the beginning scene between them, but it that wasn’t even the best part of the episode for me. I loved that we got to see them having a disagreement and that we as an audience could understand both point of views. Seeing them both stand of to the General was great as well and shows just how much they are willing to fight for each other.

General Lane was fantastic and I enjoyed seeing him give Clark a hard time because he’s never had to deal with that before. I also loved the fact that him Clark a hard time was actually a test for Lois to see if she’d defend Clark. I thought it was nice touch to show that he really had Lois’ best interests at heart. It was also interesting that writers made it ambiguous whether or not the General figured out Clark was the blur.

This episode also confirmed for me why making Tess Watchtower was a great choice. She was able to use her past to help the JLA and I loved that she made the place more homey and family like. I don’t think it was intentional, but I remember Courtney bringing that up to Chloe in Absolute Justice and I liked that Tess ended up being the one to do it.

Photo

Steve Burton

#5 - 9x06 Crossfire
This is the...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#5 - 9x06 Crossfire

This is the episode that features Lois and Clark’s first kiss, but there is also so much more than that. This episode actually reminded me a bit of an episode of “Lois & Clark” because of the mixture of romance comedy and adventure. There also was loads of bantering and flirting between Lois and Clark. The main reason I love this is because it’s not something generally see from Clark. I loved seeing him attempt to win Lois over without much brooding. We got to see how comfortable they are with each other and how well they know each other. I also loved that he was willing to accept Lois possibly getting back together with Oliver if it meant she was happy. We know he didn’t need to worry about that, but I still thought it spoke about deep his feelings for her ran.

Aside from the Lois and Clark I enjoyed seeing Chloe and Stuart going back and forth with each other and I actually think that he would have been an interesting choice as love interest since they were so similar. I enjoyed the introduction to Mia and I actually wish we’d gotten more of her in season 10. This episode also has the distinction of being the episode that cemented my love of Tess as a character. Throughout the episode Zod underestimates her and eventually sends a one of his men to kill her. I loved the way that scene where we find out Tess killed the guy because it was so subtle. They didn’t need to show us the actual murder and I thought it was nice touch. The scene also made me think (and it was confirmed by interactions with Lionel & Lex in Season 10) that she’s had a lifetime of being underestimated by the men in her life and it made look at her differently.

Favorite Smallville Episodes
#6 -10x11 Icarus
I’ll...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#6 -10x11 Icarus

I’ll admit that I was excited about this episode mostly because I knew Clark would be proposing to Lois. I assumed that would be the only portion I really enjoyed, but I am happy to say I enjoyed the entire episode from beginning to end. We begin of course with the proposal, which was everything I hoped it would be. I loved that Tess arranged an engagement party for Lois and And Clark so we got to see everyone in a joyful setting. We also learn that due to the VRA there are curfews and a backlash against the heroes. What I love most about this episode is that female characters all get a chance to shine in this episode. We get to see it with both the heroes as well as the villainous characters like Trotter. That scene where Lois convinces Cat to let her go is great and it also showed us a different side of Cat. I also loved seeing Lois, Tess and Emil work together to make sure nothing was revealed about the heroes when they were captured.

Seeing Carter again was also a highlight. He was great in Shield, but this episode cemented him as one of my favorite heroes of the series. I knew based on the hints in Shield as well as the title “Icarus” that he was likely going to die, but it was still sad to see. Lastly, I loved that there was an actually surprising cliffhanger. I assumed the show would end with Carter’s funeral, but I was not expecting them to all be knocked out. It was actually kind of fun not knowing what would happen.

Favorite Smallville Episodes

The major...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#7 -9x19 Charade

The major reason this episode is on this list is because it has my favorite version of the “Triangle for Two” out of all the Superman properties. The reason this version is my favorite is because it was done in a way that didn’t make Lois look stupid or Clark look like a jerk. In this episode Clark finds out that Zod has been impersonating the Blur and he has to figure out what to do about it. This results in him breaking his ties with Lois as the Blur. By the end of this episode it becomes clear that keeping his secret from Lois is longer working for either relationship. At the time I wasn’t sure if the secret would be revealed to Lois, but now knowing that it is revealed makes the foreshadowing even better. I also liked the reporter aspect of this episode and I wish had gotten more episodes that focused on the Lane-Kent relationship.

Favorite Smallville Episodes

I...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#8 - 9x02 Metallo

I wasn’t completely convinced until the next episode “Rabid”, but “Metallo” is the episode that made me believe Season 9 could a be the start of a great season. John Corben is probably the first villian in a long time where I actually felt empathy for his situation. He was generally a good guy that ended up in an unfortunate situation. I’d gotten used to villains like Lex & Davis where I was expected to feel sorry for them despite them doing terrible things and having them waste more than one chance to do the right thing. John was different and it refreshing thing to see. Something else I loved about Metallo is that from the beginning John is distrustful of The Blur (Clark’s) motives and I think this is the first instance of foreshadowing that Clark will need a more public identity.

Getting to Lois and Clark, I love that throughout the episode it’s clear that the two miss each other. I love that it’s made clear even more than savior that with Lois back, Clark is even keep his stance about staying away.

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#9 - 4x01 Crusade

This episode features the introduction of Lois Lane and it doesn’t disappoint at all. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure about introducing Lois so early, but now I think it’s one of the best decisions made about the series. I really don’t think the show would have lasted as long as it did without her nor do I think I would’ve still been watching. It’s really interesting seeing Lois in this episode because like Clark, she made huge changes throughout the years. The Lois we see in this episode is one that is guarded and rough around the edges and it shows us that interacting with Clark and his family changes her. It gives her something she was missing and while I have no doubt she’d still be awesome without Clark, it’s clear he does make her an even better person. We saw more of Kal-El than Clark in this episode, but it still a great episode. I always found it interesting that he allowed Lois to drag him around without a fight and almost seemed soothed by her.

Favorite Smallville Episodes
#10 - 10x21 & 22 - Finale...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#10 - 10x21 & 22 - Finale Parts 1 & 2

I know this episode is considered two episodes for many people, but I really think it works best as one episode. A year ago this episode would have probably been higher on the list, but after some time and a rewatch of the entire series, I found there were episodes I enjoyed more as a whole than the finale. I wasn’t really a fan of the marginalization of Martha in order to give Jonathan and Jor-El a role in the finale. I don’t really think we needed either of them at least to the extent we got them. Also while I loved that Tess redeemed herself and died a hero, I still wish she had been allowed to leave after finding people that genuinely care about her. Especially now knowing that had Lex not returned she wouldn’t have been killed off.

With that said, I loved everything else about the finale. I enjoyed the fact that every character was likable and at their best for this episode. I loved that we got to see a kick ass Tess & Lois one last time. The wedding was great for several reasons. When you see Clark in the pilot he’s afraid he’ll end up alone and near the end of the episode he has fantasy of dancing with Lana. In that particular fantasy Lana asks Clark if he’s okay and he replies that he’s perfect. What I love is we get a variation of this exchange in the finale when he and Lois are walking down aisle. I love that Clark finally gets to live out the dream he had then years ago. I also love that it’s made clear throughout the episode that Clark inspires those around him. We see it with Oliver when he helps him overcome being influenced by Darkseid and later with Tess when she eventually confronts Lex. I love that at the same time Clark is debuting as Superman, Lois is becoming the top reporter she is meant to be. The last sequence is great because we finally get to see everyone in their future and it actually makes you want to continue the journey with them. I thought it was awesome that the writers managed to make you feel that way with 10 year series.

Side note: The Aaron Ashmore cameo was a nice surprise and I love that they attempted to make things right after the Henry Olsen fiasco in “Doomsday”

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#11 - 1x01 Pilot

This is the episode that started everything for me.I watched the show for 10 years and other than Angel, I had never been devoted to a show before. I’m very critical of the show in general, but if I hadn’t liked this episode so much I doubt I would have continued watching. Clark was likable for me from the very beginning. This episode showed us just how it was for Clark growing up knowing he’s different from everyone. I love watching the Pilot knowing that Clark gets everything he’s hoping for and more by the end of the series. It makes this episode all the more special because it sets the stage for the journey Clark takes.

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#12 - 8x05 Committed

This episode was such a surprise for me at the time because it was unlike anything we’d gotten. This episode has comedy, drama, romance, and it’s part of the reason Season 8 is one of my favorite seasons despite all the issues I had with the season. This is where Lois’ feelings for Clark are confirmed and its done in such a great way. I thought it was genius that we got to have Lois reveal her feelings, but still manage to convince Clark she was faking. The Lane and Kent scenes we got were great and I also enjoyed the side stories with Tess, Jimmy, Oliver, and Chloe.

Favorite Smallville Episodes
#13 - 7x18 Apocalypse
Season 7...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#13 - 7x18 Apocalypse

Season 7 is without a doubt my least favorite season of the series, but this episode was highlight for me and showed me that the show could still be good. Clark wasn’t in his best place in this particular episode and we ended up with our own version of “It’s a Wonderful Life”. I loved the glimpses of Lois and Lex that we got. At that point I figured that would likely be the best we got of their future counter parts. I also love that Lois is the one person that trusts him despite not knowing him (we get to see this again in “Luthor” & “Kent). This episode also manages to give us a great scene between Lois and Clark which nice after a season of very little interaction.

Favorite Smallville Episodes
#14 - 5x06 Exposed
On the surface...

Favorite Smallville Episodes

#14 - 5x06 Exposed

On the surface this episode looks like it was just an excuse to get Erica Durance in stripper clothing, but when you look closer this not the case. What I love about this episode is that Chloe was the only one that actually had a job as reporter, yet we see that Clark & Lois who (at that point) were not planning careers in journalism are naturally talented at it. There have been many glimpses of it before, but I think this particular episode was the most blatant. I really love that moment on the roof after Maggie leaves because it was such a nice glimpse into their future.

Sidenote: Even after all these years, I don’t think I will ever be able to hear Don’t Cha by the Pussycat Dolls and not think of this episode.
